Pyeong to square meters
One pyeong is exactly 3.305785 m². For mental math use pyeong × 3.3 = m² and m² × 0.3 = pyeong. An 84 m² apartment is about 25 pyeong (25.4 to be exact), and 34 pyeong is roughly 112 m². Korean real-estate listings quote "exclusive area" in m², while the colloquial "25-pyeong" or "34-pyeong" size refers to the larger supply area — which is why the pyeong number always sounds bigger.
Korean traditional units
- Pyeong (평) — area. A square with 6 ja (about 1.818 m) per side = 3.3058 m². Dropped from legal units in 2007, but still the first thing Koreans say when talking about homes and land.
- Geun (근) — weight. For meat and vegetables one geun is 600 g. (Some shops use 375 g for fruit and herbal medicine, so ask.)
- Don (돈) — precious-metal weight, 3.75 g. One don of gold = 3.75 g; one nyang = 10 don = 37.5 g.
- Doe and mal (되·말) — volume. One doe = 1.8 L, one mal = 10 doe = 18 L. A doe of rice weighs about 1.6 kg.
- Ja (자, Korean foot) — length, 30.303 cm. Ten ja make one jang, and one ja is ten chi (3.03 cm). Still used for hanbok and furniture measurements.
- Ri (리) — distance, about 392.7 m. "Ten ri" is roughly 4 km.
