Dollars, euros, yen, pounds, won โ type an amount and see what it is worth in 30 currencies
How to use it
- Type an amount in the top box and pick its currency. The bottom box updates instantly. Typing in the bottom box works the other way round.
- The โ button swaps the two currencies.
- Quick amounts fill in 1, 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000 units so you can read the rate at a glance. For currencies usually quoted per 100 (yen, dong, rupiah) the per-100 rate is shown too.
- The rate table below lists what one unit of your chosen currency is worth in twelve major currencies.
- The fee estimate card shows how much of your money a bank's exchange spread eats, given the fee discount they offer.
- Your last currency pair is remembered in this browser. Amounts are never sent anywhere.
Where the rates come from
Rates are fetched from open.er-api.com, the free feed of ExchangeRate-API. They are mid-market rates updated once a day around 00:00 UTC โ not a live ticker, and slightly different from the daily rates your bank publishes. The last update time is always shown at the top. If that server is down the page falls back to frankfurter.dev (European Central Bank data), and if that fails too it uses the rates last saved in your browser. Fetched rates are cached for six hours.
Mid-market vs. the rate you actually get
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are asking on the currency market. Nobody exchanging cash gets exactly that rate: banks, bureaux and card networks add a spread on top. Cash exchange spreads of 1.5โ3% on major currencies are common, and far more at airport kiosks; bank transfers and card payments usually sit around 0.5โ1%. Some banks quote this as a "discount" on their standard spread โ a 90% discount on a 1.75% spread means you pay 0.175%.
| Mid-market | Reference rate used by this converter |
|---|---|
| Cash buy / sell | Mid-market ยฑ roughly 1.5โ3% at a bank, more at airports |
| Card / transfer | Mid-market ยฑ roughly 0.5โ1%, plus any fixed fee |
Paying less to exchange money
- Compare the total you receive, not the advertised "0% commission". The spread is where the cost hides.
- Airport counters are the most expensive place to exchange. Change only what you need for the first day.
- Multi-currency cards and fintech accounts often exchange close to the mid-market rate; carry less cash and pay by card where you can.
- Splitting a large exchange into a few smaller ones over time averages out rate swings.
FAQ
Are the rates live?
No. They refresh once a day. For a large transfer, check the rate your bank or broker applies at that moment.
Why does my bank show a different number?
Different update time, and the bank's rate includes its spread. Use this page for planning and rough budgets; use your statement for exact figures.
Are weekends updated?
The feed updates daily, but markets are closed, so weekend rates repeat Friday's close.
