Why Instagram removes your line breaks

Instagram strips empty lines and trailing spaces from captions. The neatly spaced paragraphs you wrote in Notes collapse into one solid block the moment you post. The fix is to put an invisible character (the Braille blank, U+2800) on each empty line so Instagram treats it as a line with content. This tool does that for you automatically.

How to add spaces to an Instagram caption

  • Paste your text on the left and the converted version appears on the right. Hit Copy result, then paste it into your caption.

The options, one by one

Invisible character on blank linesDefault. Each empty line gets one Braille blank (U+2800). To the eye it is still a blank line; to Instagram it is a line with content.

Reading the counter

Under the result box you will see N / 2,200 characters ยท N / 30 hashtags ยท N blank lines preserved. The character count is taken from the converted result, so every filler character on a blank line counts as one, and an emoji counts as one. The hashtag figure is the number of #tags in the result. If either goes over its limit the number turns red โ€” trim the caption or the tags before posting. "Blank lines preserved" is the number of lines that received a filler character, a quick way to check that every paragraph gap survived.

What the converter does

  1. Normalises Windows line endings (CRLF) to a single kind.
  2. If the hashtag option is on, collects every #tag from the body and cleans up the spaces left behind.
  3. If trimming is on, strips trailing spaces and tabs from every line.
  4. Replaces each whitespace-only line โ€” an empty line โ€” with the filler you chose (Braille blank or period). Two blank lines in a row both get filled, so wider gaps stay wide.
  5. If hashtags were collected, appends five filler lines and then the tags on one line.

All of this happens in your browser; the text is never sent to a server. Copy result writes to the clipboard, and if clipboard access is blocked it selects the result box and tries the old copy command instead.

Why a Braille blank?

U+2800 is the Braille cell with no dots raised. Nothing is drawn on screen, but Unicode classes it as a symbol rather than whitespace, so Instagram's blank-line clean-up leaves it alone. An ordinary space or an ideographic space is whitespace and gets removed; zero-width spaces are treated inconsistently from app to app. The Braille blank is the reliable choice, which is why it is the default here.

Frequently asked questions

I can see a small box or dot where the blank lines are

Some devices and fonts draw the Braille blank as an empty Braille cell. Inside the Instagram app it is almost always invisible, but if it bothers you, switch to the period method.

I turned on the hashtag option and my tags vanished from the text

They were moved, not deleted. Scroll to the bottom of the result box: after five blank lines the tags sit together on one line. If you want tags to stay inline, turn the option off.

Why not just add line breaks in the Instagram app?

Pressing return several times inside the app often collapses when you post, and text pasted from Notes or a computer almost always loses its gaps. Paste the converted text instead: each blank line now holds a filler character, so it stays.

Does converting make the caption longer?

By one character per blank line. Moving the hashtags adds five spacer lines on top of that. If your caption is close to 2,200 characters, watch the counter.
