Free reaction time test โ€” tap when the screen turns green, get your average in milliseconds over five rounds, and see where you rank

How the test works

Press START, then tap the pad. It turns red and, after a random delay of one to three and a half seconds, flashes green. Tap as fast as you can. If you tap while it is still red you jumped the gun and the whole run restarts from round one. After five valid rounds you get your average reaction time in ms; your best is saved in this browser and you can post it to the global leaderboard with a nickname.

What is a good reaction time?

Most people land between 200 and 300 ms on a click or tap test. Under 200 ms is the level of competitive gamers and athletes, 200โ€“250 is quick, 250โ€“320 is average, and over 350 usually means you are tired, distracted or on a laggy device. Your visual reaction time is the sum of your eye seeing the change, your brain deciding and your finger moving โ€” plus the display and touchscreen latency, which is why phones often read 20โ€“40 ms slower than a wired mouse.

How to get a faster score

  • Watch the center, not the edge. Colour changes register fastest in central vision.
  • Keep your finger resting on the screen. Moving a hovering finger costs 30โ€“50 ms.
  • Don't try to predict. The delay is random on purpose โ€” guessing gives you a false start, not a faster time.
  • Sleep, caffeine and warm-up all matter. Play a couple of rounds to warm up, then go for your record.

Compare with friends

Share your result link and your friend sees your time before playing, with a "beat it" challenge on their title screen. Want a different kind of speed test? Try the Schulte table for focus, the Stroop test for brain age, or the digit span memory test.

Scoring and leaderboard rules

The clock runs from the moment the pad is told to turn green until your finger or mouse button goes down โ€” release timing does not matter. The five round times are summed, divided by five and rounded to a whole millisecond. The grade line under your average follows fixed cut-offs:

Under 200 msโšก Pro-gamer reflexes
200โ€“249 ms๐Ÿ‘ Faster than most
250โ€“319 ms๐Ÿ˜€ About average
320 ms and up๐Ÿข Go grab a coffee first

The Global Top 10 on the title screen is sorted by lowest average. Submitting needs a nickname of up to 12 characters; the server only accepts averages between 80 and 2,000 ms and takes at most five submissions per minute from one connection. Your personal best lives in this browser's local storage and is never uploaded unless you submit it.

Why the same person scores differently on different devices

The number you see is the reaction time of you plus your hardware. When the pad switches to green the change is drawn on the next screen refresh, so a 60 Hz display adds up to about 16.7 ms and a 120 Hz display up to about 8.3 ms before you can even see it. Touchscreens then need time to register the contact and hand it to the browser, and a Bluetooth mouse is slower than a wired one. None of that is your nervous system, which is why comparing scores is only fair between people on similar devices.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my score change every time?

Reaction time naturally swings by tens of milliseconds from one attempt to the next, which is exactly why the test averages five rounds instead of taking one. Sleep, caffeine and how focused you are all shift the number within a single day, so run it a few times and keep your best average.

What happens on a false start?

Tapping while the pad is still red shows "Too early!" and clears every round recorded so far in that run. Tap once more and you start again from round one โ€” predicting the switch never pays off.

My phone reads slower than my laptop. Is something wrong?

No. Touch input latency and display latency both add to the raw figure, as explained above. Resting your finger almost on the glass while you wait removes the travel time and usually recovers 30โ€“50 ms.

Why can't I submit my score?

Averages below 80 ms or above 2,000 ms are rejected as implausible, the nickname field cannot be empty, and more than five submissions in a minute from the same connection are throttled โ€” wait a moment and try again.
